Moderna posts record surge as Fed minutes revive rate-hike risk
Policy support at the long end improved the morning tone, but hawkish Fed minutes later checked risk appetite. Company-specific catalysts dominated equities, led by Moderna’s historic surge, while crypto rallied and geopolitical headlines raised after-hours uncertainty. • Rates: The Treasury said it would at least double buybacks of debt maturing in 10 to 30 years, pulling the 30-year yield down as much as nine basis points to 5.19%. July Fed minutes later showed many officials thought further tightening might be needed if inflation stayed elevated. • Biotech: Moderna closed 177% higher, its largest-ever gain, after its personalized vaccine with Merck reduced melanoma recurrence and spread in a late-stage trial. Merck gained about 12%, while BioNTech climbed roughly 20%. • Crypto: Bitcoin gained about 6% ahead of a White House industry meeting. Coinbase jumped 13%, Strategy rose 14% and Circle advanced 12%. • Iran: Trump announced an economic-isolation campaign against Iran after the close and threatened countries whose institutions or businesses provide Tehran a lifeline, although he offered no implementation details.
